Twelve years of lime plaster, oak beams, and patience. We sat with Anna for a morning to ask why.

Anna is not from Viscri. She is from Saschiz, two villages over, but in this part of the country two villages is a different planet. She bought Casa Saxonia in 2011 when it was nearly a ruin — the roof half open, the courtyard wall pushed in by a fallen walnut tree, the kitchen floor missing entirely. The price, she says, was less than a Berlin studio rented for in a year.
