What is different in Romania
Romania separates the legal marriage from the celebration more strictly than many countries. Knowing this early saves months.
Civil ceremony (Starea Civilă)
The only legally binding marriage in Romania is the civil one, performed by a registrar at the town hall (primărie). A religious ceremony alone is not legally recognised. Most couples do the short civil ceremony first — sometimes days before — and treat the celebration as the real event.

Religious ceremony (church)
The celebration most guests picture. Orthodox is the largest tradition, but Catholic, Lutheran/Saxon and Reformed churches all marry couples — including in the fortified Saxon churches, with the parish’s permission. A religious ceremony usually requires the civil marriage certificate first.

For foreign couples
Marrying in Romania as a non-resident is very doable, but document-heavy. You will generally need birth certificates, a certificate of no impediment (that you are free to marry), and passports — all translated into Romanian by an authorised translator and, depending on your country, apostilled or legalised. Start this three to four months out.

Rule of thumb: begin the paperwork 3–4 months before the date; book the venue 9–12 months out for peak summer.

The venue decides everything else: the region, the guest count, the sleep plan, the feeling of the day. This is where we start, and where our local knowledge matters most.
