Suceava was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia from 1388 to 1564 — Stephen the Great ruled from here for 47 years. The hilltop Citadel (Cetatea de Scaun) still dominates the skyline, restored in the 2010s into one of the best castle museums in Romania. The town itself is modest, but it is the practical base for the painted-monastery loop: Voroneț, Sucevița, Moldovița, Humor are all within an hour. The airport (SCV) connects to Bucharest and a handful of European cities.
Why come here
It is the only sensible base for Bucovina. You sleep in a guesthouse in Suceava or one of the surrounding villages, do a loop of three or four monasteries on day one, and a quieter day-trip — Putna, Marginea black pottery, the Rarău mountain — on day two.
Things to do
- Climb to the Citadel of Suceava — 600 years old, beautifully restored, panoramic.
- Do the monastery loop — Voroneț (the famous blue), Humor, Moldovița, Sucevița in one big day or two relaxed.
- Visit Putna — Stephen the Great's burial monastery, the spiritual heart of Moldavian history.
- Find a painted-egg workshop in a village — Vama or Vatra Dornei still keep the tradition alive.
- Try smoked Bucovinean food at a village pension — afumătură, balmoș, kefir.
- In winter, the Bucovina ski areas (Vatra Dornei, Sucevița) are quiet and reasonable.
When to come
May–June and September. The monasteries are open year-round but exterior frescos look best in side-light — late afternoon. Avoid the major Orthodox holidays unless you want to see local pilgrims.
