Prejmer Fortified Church

The largest fortified church in eastern Europe — four metres of wall, 272 family rooms inside.

About

Prejmer (Tartlau) was attacked roughly fifty times in five centuries — Tatars, Ottomans, Wallachians, Habsburgs. The Teutonic Knights built the church, and the Saxon villagers turned it into something extraordinary: walls four metres thick, 272 wooden chambers built into the inner walls for each village family to retreat to during a siege. Each chamber is numbered and still labelled with the family name.
