Făgăraș Mountains

The highest range in Romania — Moldoveanu (2,544m), bears, the European Wilderness initiative.

About

The Făgăraș are Romania's alpine spine — eight peaks above 2,500 metres, narrow ridges, and the highest concentration of brown bears in Europe. The Foundation Conservation Carpathia is buying up logging concessions here to create a new wilderness park the size of Yellowstone. Day hikes from the Transfăgărășan road are reasonable; multi-day traverses are serious.
