Getting here by train

Sleep in Vienna, wake up in Transylvania.

The train is the slowest way to get here and the one guests talk about the longest. The night train from Vienna rolls through the Carpathian foothills at breakfast time — and it stops in Sighișoara and Brașov, right in the middle of our world.

The night train from Vienna

ÖBB and CFR run a direct sleeper from Vienna to Bucharest several times a week (about 19 hours). The route crosses into Romania at Curtici and runs via Arad, Deva and Sighișoara to Brașov — so for the Saxon villages you do not ride to the end: step off at Sighișoara or Brașov in the morning.

  • ·Book on tickets.oebb.at (opens ~6 months ahead; sleeper berths sell out first)
  • ·Seat, couchette (4/6-berth) and sleeper classes — the couchette is the sweet spot
  • ·Get off at Sighișoara for the Saxon Triangle, Brașov for the Burzenland

The day route via Budapest

Faster but less restful: any railjet to Budapest, then the daily IR trains onwards to Cluj or through the Criș valley towards Brașov. Around 16 hours from Vienna in total — doable with a book and a window seat, prettier than it sounds once you cross the border.

Trains inside Romania

CFR InterRegio trains connect Bucharest with Brașov (2.5–3 h), Sighișoara (4 h), Sibiu (5–6 h) and Cluj (8 h). They are slow by Western standards and honest about it — but the Predeal pass and the Olt valley from the window are part of the trip. Buy on cfrcalatori.ro or at the station; reservations are included and trains rarely sell out outside holidays.

  • ·Winter delays happen; plan generous connections and never book the last onward train of the day.
  • ·Luggage travels with you in the compartment — no check-in, no limits within reason.
  • ·Card payment works in stations and online; keep small cash for the station kiosk coffee.
